Choline and Cholesterol

Yup… 2 of the “C words” you’ll hear a lot about in the LCHF and Paleo world.

Simply put, consuming cholesterol as part of your diet does not necessarily raise the measurable cholesterol found in your blood.

It’s a very necessary ingredient for optimum health though. To go cholesterol-free when you eat because you think it might be “unhealthy” is actually backwards. Before you drink the “cholesterol-is-the-boogie-monster” Kool-Aid™, consider this article by Chris Masterjohn. At the very bottom, read his argument for a pro-ketogenic diet (ketosis is just a very low-carb diet).

Also, for you to peruse, is Mark’s write-up that tells you all you need to know about how cholesterol works and is not the bad guy it has been made out to be. This sums it all up – and make sure to read the comments too!

Now onto choline. Never hear of it? Probably because it’s in your mind. No, I mean it… It’s actually in your mind! This essential nutrient is critical to memory and brain function. If you eat eggs, organ meats, select veggies, certain nuts… well, just do the research and you’ll see the lists of which foods contain this stuff – but, choline is a very necessary amino acid that the average person lacks in their diet. There are plenty of studies showing how Alzheimer’s disease can be linked to a shortage of choline in the diet, so why wait until you reach that point? Eat cholesterol and choline-rich foods now to save the trouble as you get older!
